Toledo Refuses To Accept Ohio Supreme Court Verdict
The Ohio Supreme Court last month rejected Toledo’s argument that a friendly local judge could block the legislature from passing laws that might affect the municipal speed camera program. The high court blasted the lower court for attempting to interfere with the General Assembly’s constitutional authority to pass laws. Eight days later, the city was back in the Lucas County courthouse with a new attempt to block Ohio’s 2015 budget law, House Bill 64, which reduced funding to municipalities that refuse to abide by a number of limited restrictions on the use of automated ticketing machines.

Washington Court Blocks Suit Over Sneaky School Zone Signs
Motorists who received speed camera tickets in a trio of locations marked with non-compliant school zone signs are not entitled to relief. The Washington Court of Appeals on Monday rejected a challenge to the automated speed traps on procedural grounds. The decision means the city of Seattle can keep the $10 million in profit that the devices generated through thousands of $234 tickets.

Federal Judge: It Is Not A Crime To Drive Slow Near Cops
A federal judge was not impressed last week with the excuse police gave for a series of traffic stops that eventually led to a drug bust. Under Supreme Court precedent, an individual police officer’s subjective intention in pulling someone over is irrelevant as long as an objective justification for the stop can be made. US District Judge Arthur J. Tarnow found no way to justify the actions of officers who actually caused a traffic violation in order to justify a stop.

France, Italy, Saudi Arabia: Speed Cameras Thumped
A masked vigilante in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia used a hammer to smash a traffic camera in broad daylight. The incident was caught by a cell phone camera. In Punta Marina, Italy, vigilantes on Friday used black spraypaint to blind the speed camera located on the Via Cristoforo Colombo, according to Ravenna e Dintorni.
