2012 Field Study Measures Turn Signal Use
The insurance industry has focused safety research efforts almost exclusively on speeding and distracted driving. Only one study, published by SAE International in 2012, looked at collecting objective data on the use of turn signals under the assumption that failure to signal has a significant impact on accident rates. The 2012 study’s author, Richard Ponziani of RLP Engineering, sells an automated turn signaling technology called Intelliturn.

Federal Judge OKs Toll Diversion In New York, New Jersey
Motorists in New York and New Jersey will have their tolls continue to pay for unrelated monument upkeep at the World Trade Center. That is the result of Friday’s ruling by US District Judge Richard K. Eaton, who shot down AAA’s five-year effort to overturn the toll hikes imposed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which raises $1.5 billion from motorists crossing into New York City.

West Virginia Supreme Court Expands DUI To Private Property
West Virginians can be charged with drunk driving on their own private land, even if they represent no danger to others. The state Supreme Court of Appeals laid down this new precedent last month, overturning previous interpretations of the state’s driving under the influence (DUI) law.

France, Italy, Russia: Speed Cameras Bashed, Painted
In Montichiari, Italy, a vigilante took a sledgehammer to a speed camera last week Monday, Giornale di Brescia reported. The automated ticketing machine on the Strada Statale 236 Goitese is one of the area’s most lucrative cameras, generating 23,252 tickets last month. On Saturday, vigilantes in Nepi disabled a pair of speed cameras. According to Viterbo News, unknown individuals knocked over the bright orange housings for the newly installed devices on Strada Nepesina.
