NMA Recommendation:
Oppose

House Bill 8 is under consideration in the House Transportation Committee. If passed this bill would reduce the speed limit to 55 mph on all Interstate highways as well as on all limited and controlled access highways throughout the state.

The NMA is opposed to this bill since arbitrarily lowering speed limits ignores established traffic engineering standards. This can actually increase accidents as well as make motorists more vulnerable to aggressive speed enforcement actions. Learn more about how speed limits should be set here.
