UPDATE 6/30/22: Bill died in committee

Senate Bill 2700 would require only a warning be issued for first violations of speeding within speed traps where the speed at the time of the violation is less than seven miles per hour over the speed limit. The bill broadly defines a speed trap as any stretch of road on which officers are taking speed measurements (by any means) and issuing tickets accordingly. The bill excludes school and work zones as well as any road within 500 feet of a church or hospital. It is pending in the Senate Transportation and Safety Committee.

The NMA supports this bill as a way to take the profit motive out of traffic enforcement, thwart the spread of speed traps and lessen the negative impact on responsible motorists. Learn more about speed traps here.
