Bill Title:

Establishes five-year pilot program to enforce "don't block the box" signs through use of automatic cameras

NMA Recommendation:
Oppose

UPDATE January 31, 2020: The bill was automatically tabled by the end of the 2019 legislative session.

Bill AB 4862 was introduced to the Assembly on January 15, 2019 and was referred to the Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee. The committee has not schedule a hearing date yet.

The previous five-year pilot program for red-light cameras was widely unpopular with the people and wasn’t renewed. AB 4862 repackages the idea with the catch phrase “don’t block the box” while promoting “clear intersection monitoring systems.” The NMA is opposed to intersection ticket cameras for a number of reasons that are presented here.
