UPDATE 6/30/22: Bill died in committee

House Bill 2771 would allow cities and counties to change speed limits on streets and highways under their jurisdictions without conducting an appropriate speed study. It is pending in the House Transportation Finance and Policy Committee.

The NMA opposes this measure. Speed studies conducted in accordance with established traffic engineering practice (using the 85th percentile standard) ensure that limits are set for maximum safety. They also discourage speed traps by preventing local authorities from setting artificially low speed limits. Learn more about how speed limits should be set here.
