UPDATE April 7, 2022: Bill was signed into law on April 6, 2022.

Senate Bill 56 would require law enforcement agencies to get a warrant “to engage in ongoing surveillance, to conduct real-time or near real-time identification, or to start persistent tracking” using facial recognition or artificial intelligence with just a few exceptions. According to the Tenth Amendment Center, this would effectively ban the use of facial recognition technology to scan crowds, streets, or neighborhoods. Learn more here. The measure has already passed the Senate and is under consideration in the House Judiciary Committee.

The NMA supports this bill as a way to control the spread of intrusive surveillance measures that threaten the privacy and civil liberties of motorists. See here for a more detailed discussion of the problems associated with facial recognition technology.
