Bill A 1661 was introduced to the state Assembly on January 16, 2019 and was subsequently referred to the Transportation Committee. The bill is not currently scheduled for a public hearing or vote.
The NMA is strongly opposed to the use of red-light cameras but supports this piece of legislation because it requires drivers be forewarned of camera installations. Most accidents that occur at camera-operated intersections are caused by drivers suddenly realizing the device is present and reacting abruptly by slamming their brakes. A forewarned, prepared driver is safer than a reactionary, in-the-moment one.
