The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today released its early estimates of traffic fatalities in key safety subcategories for the first half of 2024, projecting a decline in nearly all subcategories. While the numbers show fewer deaths in nearly every category, they also mark the ninth straight quarter of declining fatalities.

Feds reject auto industry plea, keep emergency braking rule intact

A new federal regulation requiring automakers to install automatic emergency braking technology in all new consumer vehicles by 2029 will remain in place despite complaints from the auto industry. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it would make minor changes to the AEB rule, which was finalized in April, but preserve its most important tenets.

Dynamic tolling to start for express lanes on portions of I-70, I-25

Toll rates charged for the use of express lanes on Interstate 70 west of Denver and Interstate 25 between Castle Rock and Monument will change Monday to a dynamic system based on real-time traffic conditions. The tolls only apply to vehicles using the designated express lanes in those areas, which drivers can only legally enter or exit at access points marked with dashed lines. No tolls are charged in regular traffic lanes along those stretches of highway.

Feds sign off on NYC congestion pricing, clearing way for tolls to start Jan. 5

The MTA’s congestion pricing plan just got the green light. The federal government’s sign-off was necessary due to Hochul’s plan to gradually raise the base fare. The MTA is planning eight public webinars with updates on the latest toll structure, running from Dec. 4-19.

Lawsuit accuses truck manufacturers of conspiring to force adoption of electric trucks

A new antitrust lawsuit accuses truck manufacturers of colluding to eliminate diesel trucks from the market in the fight against the Advanced Clean Trucks rule and other California Air Resources Board regulations. The state of Nebraska filed a lawsuit against Daimler Truck, Navistar, Paccar, Volvo and the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association.
