ParticipantDear Hawaii NMA Members,
One of our members in Hawaii states that this bill will need to run through three committees before going to the full house. No one knows yet when each committee will be meeting on HB 187 and we can only give you 48 hours’ notice if you are interested in testifying against the bill.
If you would like to read the information about this bill, click the NMA bill tracker version HERE.
The NMA believes it is important to lodge our opposition to this bill instead of right before any meeting.
This alert is being sent to you to give you an opportunity to email each member of each committee now to ask them to oppose bringing red-light cameras to the Aloha State.
The actual online system for the Hawaii legislature allows citizens to submit comments (testimony) on the bill, but it will not accept comments until the bill has been scheduled for a committee hearing. Thus, we could have as little as 48 hours to submit comments using the online portal.
Unfortunately, your comments will also not travel along with the bill when it goes to the next reviewing committee. All they will get is a condensed version. So it will be necessary to re-submit comments just prior to each new committee hearing on the bill.
Comments that are received in such a short time before the hearing are less likely to be read and thought through by the recipient. This is a disadvantage for public comments as compared to lobbyists who are walking the capitol halls and have easier access to our elected representatives.
Please email today these elected officials today. We will work on the Senate Committee emails as well and send in a separate alert. This is an important fight for your state and the NMA will keep on top of it!
If you know of any of these elected officials personally, please reach out to them on a personal level to express your opposition to HB 187.
