Advocates for red-light cameras and speed cameras insist that the devices save lives. The latest figures from the US Department of Transportation suggest, however, that five out of the six states with the lowest fatality rates have banned the use of automated ticketing machines.

Federal Appeals Court Blocks Transfer Of Anti-Camera Lawsuit
In a significant blow to one of the red-light camera industry’s favorite legal tactics, the Eleventh Circuit US Court of Appeals on Wednesday rejected the attempt of American Traffic Solutions (ATS) to relocate a class action lawsuit to a federal courtroom. ATS sought to prevent Alabama judges from hearing arguments against the use of local laws to authorize red-light cameras on a city-by-city basis.

Federal Appeals Court Outlaws Coordinated Traffic Stops
Police are adapting to the limitations the US Supreme Court has been placing on traffic stops. Once an officer is done writing a ticket, the motorist is supposed to be free to leave without unnecessary delay. A Nevada state trooper, however, realized he could get around this time restriction by calling ahead to have the same car pulled over by a second officer. The Ninth Circuit US Court of Appeals on Monday said such tactics went too far.

Texas Report Explores Per Mile Tax
The transportation industry in Texas is pushing for a shift to a per-mile tax. A report by the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) released in April explored the policy implications of various ways of implementing the new tax likely to use GPS systems that would track motorists as they drive.

France, Germany: Speed Cameras Taken Out, Painted
In Longeault, France, vigilantes on Thursday torched the speed camera on the RD905. According to Le Bien Public, this is one of the area’s most prolific automated ticketing machines, having mailed out 11,667 citations last year. In La Ville-aux-Bois-les-Pontavert, vigilantes covered the lens of the speed camera on the 1044 with blue spraypaint last week Sunday, L’Union reported. The slogan “long live the taxes!” was also painted on the side. The speed camera on the RD988 was spraypainted fluorescent orange with a phallus on the side last week Sunday. According to L’Union, the same camera had been painted silver on April 13 and red on May 1.
