Virginia: Camera Cash Recipient Passes Speed Camera Authorization Bill
By a 22 to 18 vote, the Virginia Senate on Thursday decided to bring speed cameras to most of the state’s freeways. State Senator Bill Carrico (R-Galax), a recipient of campaign funds from camera provider American Traffic Solutions (ATS), authored the legislation to give state police the ability to set up fully automated cameras on highways marked as construction zones, whether or not any actual work was being done. Private companies like ATS would issue the $125 tickets to motorists accused of traveling 12 MPH over speed limits that have already been lowered by 10 MPH.

Tennessee Court Strikes Down Paying Lab For DUI Convictions
Labs testing blood or breath results for motorists cannot be trusted if they have a financial incentive to produce a conviction. That was the finding Tuesday of the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals, which overturned Rosemary L. Decosimo’s conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) because the state lab collects a $250 fee if the report results in a conviction.

Ex-Wife Wants Share Of Red-Light Camera Convict Pension
Wrangling over money continues in the aftermath of the Redflex bribery scandal. Next week, the red-light camera company’s former executive vice president, Aaron M. Rosenberg, will tell a three-judge appellate panel that he is entitled to a $2.3 million windfall for turning state’s evidence against his colleagues. Then, at the end of the month, Margaret Bills will testify that she is entitled to a share of the municipal pension owed to her ex-husband, John Bills.

Texas Appeals Court: Clean Cars Are Not Suspicious
Tidy motorists are unusual enough on some Texas roads that they draw the attention of at least one state trooper. In a January 24 ruling, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals went out of its way to overturn the dubious January 26, 2014 traffic stop of Jose Luis Cortez, a fastidious driver behind the wheel of a late model minivan.

France, Italy, Saudi Arabia: Speed Cameras Eliminated
In Al Lith, Saudi Arabia, a “Saher” speed camera was involved in a collision with a white Toyota Camry last week Sunday. According to SABQ, the automated ticketing machine failed to prevent the accident on the road between Jazan and Jeddah.
