Illinois: Federal Court Rules Bankruptcy Requires Return Of Seized Cars
Motorists who have their car confiscated by officials in Chicago, Illinois, have a way to get back their ride. A federal bankruptcy judge last Friday ruled in favor of Timothy Shannon, who filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy after the Windy City took his 1997 Buick Park Avenue, worth just $2675, because Shannon allegedly owed $1645 in parking tickets — some more than twenty years old.

State Farm Pays $250 Million In Bribery Scandal
State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company last week agreed to pay $250 million to settle a lawsuit over substandard vehicle repairs and racketeering. The nationwide class action was filed in Illinois over twenty years ago, but a $1 billion jury verdict against the company was thrown out by the Illinois Supreme Court in 2005. What revived the suit was the undue influence that State Farm exerted over that decision by secretly funding a justice’s campaign.

Ohio Appeals Court Throws Out Dirty Car Stop
An Ohio state trooper was rebuked last month for stopping a car by claiming it was suspiciously dirty. The Ohio Court of Appeals was unanimous in finding that there had been no legitimate reason to stop Shaune Woods on on November 3, 2015. Woods was behind the wheel of a rental car that Trooper Drew Untied said was dusty and had highly unusual fingerprints on the trunk.

France: Speed Cameras Painted And Burned
Vigilantes in France have not let up in their fight against the lowering of speed limits on secondary roads. On Thursday, the speed camera on the D923 in Coulonges-les-Sablons was set on fire, L’Action Republicaine reported. Not long after that, the camera over on the D932 in Captieux was painted orange with “for sale” written on the side, according to Le Republicain Sud-Gironde. Police in the Yvelines department have no clue who has been taking out the speed cameras. On Wednesday, the speed camera on the D446 in Jouy-en-Josas was disabled, joining four other cameras recently taken out of service with orange paint, joining similar attacks since August 27 on the D308 in Mesnil-le-Roi, on the N184 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye on the A13 in Guerville and on the D983 in Mantes-la-Ville, 78 Actu reported.
