Virginia Court Upholds Red-Light Cameras
Virginia law has until recently forbidden legal challenges to red-light camera programs. Trials were blocked in courts with the power to set precedent until state law changed in 2015 to explicitly allow such appeals. Earlier this month, a Fairfax County Circuit Court judge issued the jurisdiction’s first-ever ruling siding with the use of automated ticketing machines.

Oregon Court Rejects Car Seizure Over Insurance Card
A police officer made a mistake by hauling away a woman’s car without bothering to check whether the vehicle was properly insured. The Oregon Court of Appeals last week threw out the evidence against Candi Lee Balabon because her 2004 Mazda RX8 had been unlawfully searched.

Texas Court Smacks Buspatrol With $421,910 Fine
A Texas judge on Monday ordered one automated ticketing company to write a big check to its main rival. BusPatrol, the scandal-plagued school bus camera operator formerly known as Force Multiplier Solutions must pay $421,910 in legal fees to American Traffic Solutions (ATS), which is now known as Verra Mobility.

Study: Red-Light Cameras Failed To Reduce Accidents In Texas
Red-light cameras did nothing to improve safety during the years they were used in Houston, Texas. That was the conclusion of a recently published study by Case Western Reserve University economist Justin Gallagher and Paul Fisher, a graduate student at the University of Arizona. Their paper, published by the Social Science Research Network, covered twelve years’ worth of accident data at photo enforced intersections in Houston and Dallas.

France, Italy, Saudi Arabia: Speed Cameras Disturbed
In Asir, Saudi Arabia, a man pulled up to a speed camera in a Toyota Hilux pickup truck, got out, and pulled the device out of its mounting last week Monday. After turning the camera away from the road, the man did a dance on his way back to his truck. According to An7a, a suspect has been arrested.
