By Lauren Fix, The Car Coach

Whether you’re traveling across town, or across the country, I’m here to share some great tips and hacks to make sure you can drive to your summer destination safely, while maximizing your savings.

You can save money by bundling your loyalty programs to maximize your savings at the pump. The Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app to save 3 cents per gallon and if you qualify for their Frequent Filler Program, you’ll save another one cent per gallon on fuel.

Now, here’s a great hack–all AARP members can receive even bigger savings. AARP members earn extra points at Exxon and Mobil stations on fuel, car washes, and convenience store items, and 2x the points on fuel on member days. So you’re looking at anywhere from 4 CPG to 8 CPG in savings if you’re an AARP member using the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app or buying premium. The savings will add up quickly.

Use apps like Waze to avoid construction and accidents that will idle your vacation and burn zero miles to the gallon as you wait for traffic to move.

Choose the correct gasoline for your vehicle by looking in the gas door or in your owner’s manual. The octane rating is critical to getting the best fuel economy and performance from your vehicle. For example, Exxon and Mobil Synergy gasoline offers top-tier gasoline that has been engineered to help clean up intake valves and help improve gas mileage and performance.

Don’t forget to check your tire pressure, especially ahead of big trips. A lot of families will pack their vehicles to the brim when heading out for summer vacations. Make sure your tires aren’t underinflated to avoid any flats or blowouts on the road and to maximize fuel efficiency.

You need to pay attention to your car’s temperature because it may not just be the sun. Have an ASE-certified technician check your car’s AC and cooling system checked out ahead of time in case mechanics are also out for the long weekend.

Remember to carry an emergency kit with a jump box, tire inflation product with a compressor, first aid kit, zip ties, duct tape, gloves, paper towel, and glass cleaner.

To save money on your road trip bring your own food and drinks, convenient stores may not have your favorite choices, and having what you prefer will save you money and frustration.

Even though gasoline prices are not going down soon, using apps and Car Smarts you can save a few dollars and still enjoy your road trip.
