Wisconsin Senate Bill 741 – The Use of Automated Speed Enforcement Systems and Traffic Control Photographic Systems
Bill No.:
AB 741
Bill Location:
Wisconsin•Senate
Bill Title:
The Use of Automated Speed Enforcement Systems and Traffic Control Photographic Systems in a First Class City and Providing a Penalty
Full Bill Text NMA Recommendation:
Oppose
Senate Bill 741 would permit the City of Milwaukee to install and operate both speed cameras and red-light cameras. Use of both is currently prohibited by state statute. The bill is under consideration in the Senate Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee. If passed it would inevitably lead to the spread of photo enforcement throughout the state.
The NMA is opposed to this measure since photo enforcement in all its forms is about revenue generation, not improving highway safety. It also needlessly penalizes responsible drivers and creates many due process issues. Learn more about red-light cameras and speed cameras here and here, respectively.
